In de vroege dagen van de Ierse formatie U2 klinkt nog iets van de punk-invloeden door die in de vroege jaren tachtig rondwaren in de popmuziek. Maar na verloop van tijd gaat de band de sound verder stroomlijnen. Uiteindelijk wordt U2 hoflevenancier van de betere stadionpop én van geweldige ballads. Het levert de band rond de charismatische zanger Bono hits op als "With or Without You", "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" en "One". Het betekent niet dat de Ieren op hun lauweren gaan rusten, want met elk album volgt ook een muzikale vernieuwing. Zo experimenteert de band op Achtung Baby (1991) en Pop (1997) naar hartelust met elektronische muziek. In het nieuwe decennium lopen de albumverkopen behoorlijk terug. Met name de verkoopcijfers van Songs of Innocence (2014) en Songs of Experience (2017) vallen behoorlijk tegen. Of dat de reden is dat er tot op heden geen nieuw studioalbum is uitgebracht, is onbekend. Maar het doet weinig af aan de status van U2 als een van de grootste popacts van de twintigste eeuw en als band met nog altijd een uitmuntende livereputatie.
